Springfield, MA Hit by 2 Separate Tornado

Springfield, MA – An apparent tornado struck the downtown of one of the state’s largest cities on Wednesday afternoon, scattering debris, toppling trees and frightening workers and residents. Several injuries were reported.

Mayoral spokesman Thomas Walsh said he was looking out his City Hall window around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday when he saw a "massive cloud of debris" floating in a circle.

Video footage from WWLP-TV shows a debris-filled funnel roaring through the downtown area. The television station reported heavy damage in the city's South End section.

So far (as of 8:00PM EDT) there have been 8 tornado reports today, 7 of which were from Massachusetts. Unfortunately, the town of Springfield, MA was hit by 2 separate tornadoes today. Hundreds are injured and at least 3 have been killed from these tornadoes in Springfield. Below is footage, courtesy CBS 3 Springfield, of the tornado as it went through downtown Springfield. Tops of trees were sheared off, and at least one home was leveled.

After the winds passed, Walsh said, he could see about 10 large trees damaged in a square in downtown Springfield, the state’s third-largest city, with more than 150,000 residents.
